Female Korean players upset male opponents at Vietnam billiards tourney
VOV.VN - Female billiards players from the Republic of Korea delivered a series of surprise results in the men’s pool competition at the 2026 HBSF Tour 1 MIN Table Cup Billiards tournament, which opened in Ho Chi Minh City on June 2.
Having participated in the HBSF Tour in the women's pool, these Korean beauties decided to register for the men's competition as well, hoping to gain more experience. Their talent impressed their male counterparts.
Kim Bogeon drew attention after defeating Nguyen Dinh Hoang Nam in a tense penalty shootout following a draw in the two main sets. Hoang Nam is a notable Vietnamese player who previously won bronze at the 2026 Ho Chi Minh City Sports Games.
Kim continued her impressive run by beating Bui Hong Tan in another penalty shootout to secure a place in the top 64. Besides the men’s pool event, she is also competing in the women’s pool and women’s three-cushion carom categories.
Her two teammates Song Nakyung and Kwon Bomi also defeated Ho Chi Kien and Phung Quoc Huy, respectively, moving closer to the top 64 round.
June 3 will mark the Round 1 of the men's 3-cushion carom billiards tournament, including famous names such as national champions Le Thanh Tien, Truong Quang Hao, Nguyen Dinh Quoc, Do Nguyen Trung Hau, Mai Tan Huyen, and others.
Taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from June 2 to 7, the tournament organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Billiards & Snooker Federation (HBSF) features 360 athletes competing across four disciplines for a total prize pool of nearly VND400 million. Cueists are competing in men’s and women’s three-cushion carom, and men’s and women’s 9-ball pool.
The HBSF Tour, held since 2022, is considered the most prestigious domestic tournament. It is often referred to as the "World Cup of Vietnamese billiards," boasting a large and high-quality roster of players, meticulous organisation, professional standards, and state-of-the-art equipment.
In particular, the 2026 HBSF Tour will be the first time the pool competition format has changed, with matches played in sets. In addition, the 3-cushion carom will be more challenging, with the qualifying round limited to 80 slots which are quite different from the number of 160 slots previously.
Furthermore, only players who have competed in two tours of the HBSF Tour in a year will be eligible to participate in the HBSF Final at the end of the year, which offers even more attractive prize money. This further enhances the competitiveness and appeal of the tournament.
