AFC U17 Asian Cup quarter-finals: Vietnam eliminated after 0-3 loss to Australia
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s impressive run at the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 came to an end after a 0-3 loss to Australia in the quarterfinals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 16.
Facing a physically dominant and tactically disciplined Australian side, coach Cristiano Roland’s players were unable to produce another upset despite entering the match with high confidence following their historic qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026.
Australia immediately imposed heavy pressure from the opening minutes, using their superior physicality, pace and aerial ability to disrupt Vietnam’s game plan.
For much of the first half, Vietnam struggled to maintain possession as Australia controlled the tempo and repeatedly threatened through crosses and wide attacks.
Despite several important saves from goalkeeper Xuan Hoa and a determined defensive effort, Vietnam eventually conceded in the 40th minute. After a chaotic situation inside the penalty area following a high ball, Oliver O’Carroll reacted quickest to score from close range and give Australia a 1-0 lead.
Trailing after halftime, Vietnam pushed forward in search of an equaliser but left more space exposed in transition defence.
In the 60th minute, Georgio Hassarati capitalised on a defensive mistake by Nguyen Huynh Dang Khoa before finishing from a tight angle to double Australia’s advantage.
Vietnam attempted to respond with greater attacking intensity, but the young players appeared increasingly rushed in possession as fatigue began to affect their performance.
The best opportunity for Vietnam came through Trieu Dinh Vy, whose close-range effort failed to beat the Australian goalkeeper.
Australia sealed the victory in the 75th minute when Akeem Gerald finished off a sharp attacking move through the centre to make it 3-0.
The convincing victory sends Australia into the semifinals, where they will face China. The other semifinal will feature Japan against Uzbekistan.
Although Vietnam’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals, the tournament still marked a major milestone for the country’s youth football development.
Under coach Cristiano Roland, Vietnam demonstrated discipline, fighting spirit and tactical improvement throughout the competition. However, the defeat also highlighted the remaining gap in physicality, speed and efficiency compared to Asia’s top youth teams.
Most importantly, Vietnam’s qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026 has already secured a historic achievement and raised expectations for the future of Vietnamese football.
