15 shooters named for Vietnam's Asiad 20 squad
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s national shooting team has finalized a 15-athlete roster to compete at the 20th Asian Games (Asiad 20) in Japan, positioning the sport as a leading gold-medal prospect for the country.
Before finalizing the lineup, the core pistol squad underwent a three-week training session in the Republic of Korea (RoK) to refine their techniques, particularly psychological control. Shooting events at Asiad 20 are scheduled to take place from September 20 to October 1.
Shooting was the first sport to secure a gold medal for the Vietnamese delegation at the previous Asian Games. At Hangzhou 2023, Pham Quang Huy won gold in the men's 10m air pistol event, claiming Vietnam's inaugural gold of the games, while also teaming up with teammates to win a team bronze.
Alongside Quang Huy's title defense, Trinh Thu Vinh is seen as Vietnam's prime gold medal hope in Japan. The 2000-born marksman made waves at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by finishing fourth in the women's 10m air pistol and seventh in the women's 25m pistol. Thu Vinh maintained her strong form by winning four golds and setting three records at the 33rd SEA Games before turning her full focus to Asiad 20.
Vietnamese shooting also features another notable young talent in Nguyen Thuy Trang. In early 2026, Thuy Trang won the Asian title in the women's 25m standard pistol event after defeating Indian Olympic star Manu Bhaker.
Drawing on key marksmen, shooting is expected to deliver crucial gold medals for Vietnamese sports at Asiad 20.
