Vietnam targets 4-6 gold medals at ASIAD 20 in Japan this September

The delegation will be headed by Nguyen Hong Minh, deputy director of the the Sports Authority of Vietnam (SAV), SAV said in a decision announced recently.

The Vietnamese athletes will compete in a wide range of sports, from Olympic disciplines such as athletics, swimming, weightlifting, shooting, rowing, canoeing, cycling, badminton and fencing to martial arts, team sports and newer disciplines including teqball, breaking, mixed martial arts (MMA) and esports.

The broad range of sports is expected to expand Vietnam’s medal opportunities while giving athletes valuable experience at one of Asia’s largest sporting events.

For Vietnam at ASIAD 20, the Games will also serve as an important test of the competitiveness of the country’s leading athletes and the effectiveness of preparations for other major international competitions.

A send-off ceremony for the delegation is scheduled to take place in Hanoi on September 9.

The 20th Asian Games will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The event will bring together sports delegations from across Asia to compete in a wide range of sports and disciplines.

At ASIAD 19 held in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, Vietnam sent a 504-member delegation, including 337 athletes, to compete in 31 sports. The Vietnamese delegation won 27 medals, comprising three gold, five silver and 19 bronze medals, and finished 21st among 45 countries and territories.

The results met the target of winning between two and five gold medals set before the Games. The three gold medals came in shooting, sepak takraw and karate.

Vietnam earn full quota for gymnastics at ASIAD 20

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese men's gymnastics team have achieved their goal of qualifying for the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20) in Japan with a maximum of five athletes by finishing in the top 10 of the men's team event at the 2026 Asian Gymnastics Championships in China.
