Yagi to move into East Sea on Sept. 3, likely to gain further strength

VOV.VN - Tropical storm Yagi is forecast to enter the East Sea on September 3 and is likely to gain further strength into a powerful typhoon, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 1a.m. on September 3, Yagi was swirling around the northern part of the Philippines’ Luzon Island with winds gusting 110kph.

It is highly likely that Yagi will cross longitude 120 and enter the East Sea on September 3 afternoon or evening, becoming the third tropical storm to hit the regional waters this year, said Nguyen Van Huong, an official of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Huong said atmospheric conditions such as winds and air pressure, and ocean conditions like warm sea surface temperatures are favourable for the storm to intensify and move westward.

“Both Vietnamese and international weather forecasting centers have agreed that when Yagi enters the East Sea, it will primarily move westward, with an increasing intensity,” said the official.

He cited analysis of international weather forecasting watchdogs saying Yagi will be at its strongest when it is in the area to the east of China’s Hainan Island, but they all share the view that the storm will intensify, with winds gusting from 110 to 160kph.

“At this time, it cannot be confirmed whether Yagi will pass across China’s Hainan Island and move into the Gulf of Tonkin to directly affect the mainland of Vietnam,” said Huong. “However, the northeastern part of the East Sea will experience the effects of the storm’s circulation, starting from September 3.”

Between September 4 and 6, Yagi is anticipated to reach a very strong typhoon level in the northeastern part of the East Sea, with maximum sustained winds of more than 150kph near its eye.

When Yagi crosses the northern part of Luzon Island, the intensity and trajectory of the storm may still change due to the influence of the terrain and large-scale steering currents, said Huong.
