Woman receives US$336 in fines for keeping lost wallet
VOV.VN - A cleaning lady has been fined US$336 (VND7.5 million) for picking up a wallet of a British tourist at the Noi Bai International Airport and failing to return it to the rightful owner.
“In Vietnam, you are required to return lost items to the owner,” a police officer told the media.
“Even if the wallet doesn’t contain valuable items, you can still face charges if you don’t make an effort to return it to the owner,” the officer said.
The lady, Do Thi Lien, 54, worked as a janitor at the Noi Bai International Airport. Security cameras caught her picking up the wallet of a British tourist who had passed through the airport on her way from Bangkok.
The contents of the wallet included some identification papers and US$74 (VND1.5 million) in cash.
Police officers say the best way to return a wallet is by dropping it by any police station or, as in this case, turning it over to any law enforcement officials at the airport.
