Vietnam’s sixth monkeypox case detected in Ho Chi Minh City

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Centre of Disease Control (HCDC) on October 4 confirmed that the southern city has detected an additional case of monkeypox, taking total infections to five in the locality alone.

The 22-year-old man, a resident of Tan Binh district, went to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases for a medical check-up on October 2 following suspected symptoms of the disease.

The hospital then took his sample and results later showed that he had tested positive for the monkeypox virus. The man was swiftly put into quarantine to receive treatment.

The HCDC urged those who came into close contact with the patient to self-quarantine at home for 21 days immediately after he was diagnosed with monkeypox.

Vietnam has so far documented six monkeypox infections, with two of them having the source of transmission from outside of the country.

Monkeypox is currently listed as a Group B infectious disease in Vietnam, which is capable of spreading quickly and possibly causing death, according to the municipal Department of Health.

Upon the discovery of the first reported case of monkeypox imported from abroad, the city’s Department of Health immediately instructed the HCDC, hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities to initiate monitoring and communication initiatives aimed at curbing the disease's transmission.
