Vietnamese crew members rescued in international waters

VOV.VN - A total of 18 Vietnamese crew members of the Dolphil 18 ship, which sank in international waters, have been successfully rescued by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA).

The Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA) has reported that at 4:15 a.m. on January 11, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center received an emergency call about the Vietnamese cargo ship Dolphil 18. The vessel, which was transporting timber from Papua New Guinea to My Thoi in An Giang Province, was sinking in international waters. The crew was forced to abandon the ship after sending out a distress signal.

The incident occurred after the ship, operated by Hai Phuong Shipping Company Limited, encountered severe weather conditions, including strong winds and waves reaching up to five meters, about 146 nautical miles northwest of the Indonesian Riau Islands.

Upon receiving the distress call, the VMA quickly coordinated with regional rescue agencies, directing the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Center to initiate an emergency response.

By 6:55 a.m., the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore confirmed that the Nicolai Maersk, a nearby vessel, had located the crew members, who were drifting at sea on life buoys, and successfully rescued them despite the harsh weather conditions.

All 18 crew members were provided with medical care and are now in stable and good health.

The Nicolai Maersk is scheduled to arrive at Tanjung Pelepas Port in Malaysia at 6:00 a.m. on January 12. The VMA has instructed the Vietnam Maritime Safety Center to collaborate with Hai Phuong Shipping Company Limited to ensure the crew members are safely received in Malaysia.
