Vietnamese community actively joins International Migrants Day in Singapore

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s community in Singapore actively joined celebrations marking International Migrants Day 2025, held at Downtown East’s D’Marquee on Dec. 14, drawing about 10,000 participants.

The event was jointly organized by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and agencies supporting migrant workers. The Liaison Committee of the Vietnamese Community in Singapore (VNAS) took part with a broad array of practical activities and earned high praise from organizers.

As part of the programme, VNAS worked closely with the organizing board to distribute thousands of gift packages to migrant workers, including hundreds of Vietnamese nationals. The community also contributed traditional cultural performances to exchange activities aimed at strengthening community connections. Its exhibition booth captured  strong interest from visitors, offering an opportunity to learn about the Vietnamese community in Singapore and to experience Vietnam’s culture in a vivid, approachable and distinctly national way.

VNAS’s engagement underscored the sense of responsibility, cohesion and bridge-building role of the Vietnamese community in Singapore, helping acknowledge and amplify the positive contributions migrant workers make to Singaporean society and development.

Nguyen Hong Trang, a representative of VNAS, said the committee prepared 1,500 gift packages this year, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, herbal shampoo, towels and pho, for distribution to the community. “The aim is to bring the committee’s dedication to connecting with the migrant worker community in Singapore, especially Vietnamese workers,” she said.

Offering encouragement and support at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Tran Phuoc Anh noted that the Vietnamese community, numbering more than 33,000 people, makes an important contribution to the island city state’s economy as well as to Vietna-Singapore bilateral ties. Activities like this, he said, reflect the close bonds between the Vietnamese community and other communities in Singapore.

With attention also given to diversity within the community, VNAS distributed additional gifts to Vietnamese Catholic workers. The presentation took place later the same day after Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Singapore.

International Migrants Day 2025 aims to raise awareness of the role and contributions of migrant workers, while promoting understanding and cohesion between migrant communities and the Singaporean public. Speaking at the event, MOM Minister Tan See Leng expressed gratitude for migrant workers’ contributions, saying the Singapore government remains committed to caring for everyone, including migrant workers. He noted remarkable progress since 2021 in areas such as housing, healthcare and recreational provision under a multi-year roadmap.

Commenting on VNAS’s contributions, Martin Koh, deputy director of the Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) department at MOM and a representative of the organizing board, said he sincerely appreciates VNAS’s support,  adding that since 2023 the two sides have worked very closely together at major events such as Racial Harmony Day and the current celebration, with VNAS making very important contributions.

Together with event partners, Minister Tan See Leng visited the booths and posed for commemorative photos, conveying appreciation for the contributions made by various communities, including the Vietnamese community in Singapore, to the host country’s multicultural economic and cultural life.
