Vietnam takes action against plastic pollution
VOV.VN - The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with the administration of Quang Ninh province held a meeting on June 1 to celebrate World Environment Day (June 5) and launch the Month of Action for the Environment 2025 themed “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Agricultural and Environment Le Cong Thanh emphasised that “Plastic pollution has become one of the most serious threats to our living environment.”
He quoted statistics, saying the world produces approximately 430 million tonnes of plastic annually, more than two thirds of which are single-use products. These products quickly turn into waste, polluting oceans and severely impacting ecosystems and human health.
In Vietnam, an estimated 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated each year, but around 27% is recycled, while most is either buried or incinerated that poses significant environmental risks.
Thanh urged local people to fight against plastic waste, which is one of the most serious challenges facing the environment.
“No country can stand aside in the fight against plastic pollution. This is a shared global responsibility,” stressed the Deputy Minister.
Vietnam has been one of the most proactive countries in addressing plastic pollution. It is among the first three countries to establish and operate a working group to implement the National Plastic Action Partnership. In addition, it has enacted the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 and adopted a National Action Plan aimed at reducing plastic waste in the sea and ocean by 75% by 2030.
However, the Deputy Minister also acknowledged that despite positive progress, Vietnam still faces many challenges in managing and reducing plastic waste. He expressed hope that this Month of Action for the Environment would continue to spread the spirit of “Green Living – Green Action”, encouraging the active participation of all sectors of society in environmental protection and sustainable development.
A wide range of activities were also launched on this occasion, including offering non-woven fabric bags to replace plastic bags for tourists on cruise ships on Ha Long Bay, as well as visiting an exhibition to display models which encourage the reduction of plastic waste.
