Vietnam sets up forward command to direct Yagi response measures
VOV.VN - The Government of Vietnam has established a forward command based in the northern port city of Hai Phong to direct storm prevention and control over Yagi that is approaching the mainland.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Ministers, heads of ministerial-level agencies, and Government agencies to direct storm prevention and control and overcome the consequences of typhoon Yagi as well as possible subsequent floods caused by Yagi circulation.
According to the government leader, a number of Ministers and Deputy Ministers have fanned out to localities, especially coastal provinces and cities, to inspect and direct storm prevention and control.
The Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security have mobilized forces to be on duty and help people with response measures, including reinforcing public works and resident homes and relocating residents from danger areas.
Hai Phong is anticipated to bear the brunt of Yagi when the powerful typhoon makes landfall. The city has so far relocated more than 7,000 households, involving tens of thousands of people, from deteriorating old apartment buildings, fishing cages, landslide and flood-prone areas, and dormitories to safe shelters.
Other localities such as Quang Ninh and Thai Binh are also racing against time to evacuate people from vulnerable areas to safe places before the storm makes landfall.
Yagi is roaring into the northern coast and is forecast to batter the mainland on September 7 afternoon.
