Super typhoon Yagi to make landfall across northern Vietnam in 24 hours

VOV.VN - Super typhoon Yagi is now roaring into the Gulf of Tonkin and is expected to blast the mainland of Vietnam on September 7 afternoon, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

At 4:00a.m. on September 6, Yagi was churning across the north-eastern part of the East Sea, about 200 km east-southeast of China’s Hainan Island and 620 km southeast of Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province.

It was moving westward at a speed of about 20 kmh, with gusts exceeding 201kph near its eye.

Yagi is forecast to batter the northern coast of Vietnam on September 7 afternoon with gale-force winds downgraded to 117kph. It will continue to lose its strength into a low pressure when it moves further inland.

In the coming 24 hours, the super typhoon will strong winds, storm surges, and high waves at sea and along the coast, as well as strong winds and widespread heavy rain on land.

Meteorologists forecast that Yagi is likely to dump 200-350mm or even 500mm of rain on many localities across northern Vietnam over 24 hours.

Heavy rain could lead to severe flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes in mountainous localities.

Meteorologists warned that severe flooding will threaten a number of cities and provinces, including Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Bac Kan, and Thai Nguyen.

Meanwhile, intense short-duration rainfall will pose a significant risk of flash floods and landslides, especially in the mountainous and midland regions of Northern Vietnam, as well as Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces.
