Vietnam launches first terrestrial network to Singapore

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) on August 4 put into operation the Vietnam - Singapore terrestrial network (VSTN), the first direct land-based connection between Vietnam and Singapore.

Spanning approximately 3,900 km, the VSTN route traverses Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, and connects VNPT’s technical centre in Da Nang with major regional data hubs such as IDC Telehouse (Thailand), MY01 Cyberjaya, Equinix JH01 Johor Bahru (Malaysia), Equinix, and Global Switch (Singapore).

This landmark development marks a turning point, signaling that Vietnam is no longer fully dependent on undersea cables. As VNPT maintains complete control over the cable route from end to end, it ensures independent operations and rapid response in the event of disruptions.

In the context of frequent and prolonged submarine cable outages affecting internet quality and international connectivity, VSTN serves as a critical backup route. It strengthens the resilience, stability, and safety of Vietnam’s national telecommunications infrastructure.

At the inauguration ceremony, VNPT Chairman To Dung Thai emphasised that VSTN was the result of relentless effort, creativity, and close cooperation with domestic and international partners, along with the support of regulatory bodies in Vietnam and abroad. He reaffirmed VNPT’s pioneering role in securing digital infrastructure and contributing to Vietnam’s digital sovereignty and economic development.

Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung hailed the launch of VSTN as a vivid symbol of a digital ASEAN. He stressed the importance of having diverse, sustainable, and secure digital infrastructure, including land-based cables with fast recovery capabilities, in line with the Party and State’s vision for a safe and resilient digital Vietnam.

The Minister expressed hope that the project, the first terrestrial network 100% invested and owned by a Vietnamese enterprise, would inspire other Vietnamese companies to invest in future international cable routes.

VNPT currently operates four major international submarine cable systems - AAG, APG, AAE-1, and the newly completed SJC-2 - totaling over 65,000 km. VNPT is also the only Vietnamese enterprise to own and operate two telecommunications satellites - Vinasat-1 and Vinasat-2.
