Vietnam launches first international Internet Exchange point

VOV.VN - CMC Telecom and BBIX, Inc., a subsidiary of Japan’s Softbank Group, on February 25 unveiled their partnership in deploying the first international Internet exchange system (IX) in Vietnam.

This IX system is set to be launched at two data centres of CMC Telecom in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, marking an important advancement in improving the overall quality of Internet connection whilst promoting the digital economy in Vietnam.

Addressing the partnership signing ceremony, Dang Tung Son, executive vice president of CMC Corporation, emphasised that the partnership with BBIX will help to optimise connection costs, reduce network latency, and improve Internet access quality.

This marks a strategic step in helping CMC Telecom to accompany the development of the Vietnamese digital economy, making a significant contribution to turning the nation into a Digital Hub of the region, he said.

For his part, Hideyuki Sasaki, chairman & CEO of BBIX, expressed his delight at cooperating with CMC Telecom, a comprehensive service provider which possesses the safest and most modern data hubs nationwide.

The cooperation will be a crucial step in helping improve the quality of the Internet services in Vietnam and expand regional connectivity, he noted.

In the past, the Internet traffic exchange system in Vietnam mainly depended on the National Internet Traffic Exchange (VNIX) operated by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC).

Thanks to the newly established partnership, CMC Telecom and BBIX will be able to put a neutral IX system into operation through a Vietnamese Internet service provider in partnership with an international IX unit for the first time.

The international neutral IX system is expected to see the participation of members from several of the world's leading technology corporations, content, and Internet providers.

Moreover, the partnership is anticipated to help users, including businesses and households, enhance their experience, reduce network latency, improve transmission stability, and optimise connection costs, especially in the context of international submarine cables regularly having problems.

The deployment of this system will provide a solid foundation for domestic users to strengthen connectivity and at the same time expand Vietnamese businesses’ capability for linking to the global Internet ecosystem.

This is also a practical activity which helps to implement the Politburo’s Resolution No 57 on breakthroughs in science, technology development, innovations, and national digital transformation.
