Vietnam drops in Global Talent Index
In the Global Talent Index Report: Outlook to 2015, Vietnam dropped one spot compared to 2011, ranking 53rd out of 60 countries.
This report is compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), based on national capacity development and ability to attract and maintain talent. There are seven criteria: Demographics, compulsory education, higher education, quality of human resources, environment (to develop talent), openness and tendency to attract talent.
EIU interviewed experts and senior directors in charge of human resources about the pressures and challenges for talented people in businesses and within the country.
The report shows that talent is still an important component of long-term competitiveness of enterprises and countries. Therefore, developing, attracting and retaining talent will remain a priority agenda of policy makers and business leaders.
According to the report, the top five countries with the highest talent index are the US, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Singapore. China was promoted from 33rd (2011) to 31st (2015) - the country with the highest scores in the report.
In Southeast Asia, Singapore ranked in the top 5. Standing above Vietnam are Malaysia (39th, down three spots), the Philippines (44th, unchanged), and Thailand (45th, one spot up).
Indonesia stands behind Vietnam (56th), but it improved compared to 2011 (58th).
For Vietnam, figures of three out of seven criteria dropped , including demographics, higher education and quality of human resources. Openness and desire to attract talent saw a strong change.
Although this report is for reference only, it shows how the international community recognizes the talented people of Vietnam. But policy makers in the country need to have stronger policies to bring the seven criteria above the average figure.
