Update: Yagi death toll in Vietnam rises to 82, expected to rise
VOV.VN - Typhoon Yagi and its subsequent flash floods and landslides have so far left 82 dead and 64 missing in northern Vietnam, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (updated at 10:00 p.m. September 10).
The mountainous province of Cao Bang was the hardest hit, with 19 fatalities and 36 others reported missing.
Prolonged heavy rain triggered several landslides in Nguyen Binh district alone on September 9, claiming 17 lives. Relevant forces are now combing through large areas to search for 31 missing people.
Subsequent landslides have disrupted traffic flows, hampering rescue work, according to local authorities.
Elsewhere, Yen Bai province reported 22 fatalities, Lao Cai 19, Quang Ninh 9, Hoa Binh 4, Lang Son 2, Hai Phong 2, Tuyen Quang 2, Hanoi 1, Hai Duong 1, Bac Giang 1, Ha Giang 1, and Lai Chau 1.
Nearly 800 people have been injured by natural disasters, mostly in Quang Ninh with 536 injured people.
MARD warned that the circulation of Yagi would continue to bring heavy rain to northern localities, particularly those in the Northwest region, until the end of September 11.
In an urgent dispatch, the Prime Minister asked localities to intensify the search for victims of flash flood and landslides, evacuate residents from flood and landslide prone areas, and implement measures to ensure the safety of dikes, reservoirs, and the downstream areas of the Red River and the Thai Binh River.
He requested enhancing information and communication efforts to help people get updates and take preventive measures, in an attempt to cushion the impact of the disasters.
