Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves over 2,400 houses roofless and 2 dead in Gia Lai

VOV.VN - Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall in Gia Lai province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands early on November 7, causing severe damage, killing two people, injuring dozens, and ripping off roofs from more than 2,400 houses.

Thousands of hectares of rice and crops were damaged, many areas lost electricity, and landslides and flooding cut off localities. Local authorities are working urgently to mitigate the aftermath.

According to statistics from the Gia Lai provincial civil defence steering committee, the province recorded multiple casualties and property losses caused by typhoon Kalmaegi as of the morning of November 7.

Initial reports confirmed two fatalities across the province. In addition, two people in Quy Nhon and An Nhon wards sustained injuries.

Preliminary figures show that 45 houses collapsed completely and more than 2,400 houses lost their roofs. The storm also sank one boat and caused landslides at three transport points in An Vinh commune. In the Hoai Nhon Bac area, tidal surges inundated over 3,000 coastal households, with water depths ranging from 10 to 40 cm on average, reaching up to 80 cm in some locations.

Thousands of hectares of rice and crops were damaged, livestock and poultry were killed, and trees, power poles, signboards, and glass windows were knocked down or severely damaged by strong winds.

The province experienced widespread power outages, and communication lines in many areas were cut off, with repairs not yet fully finalized at the time of reporting.

Many localities are still surveying and tallying damages, as some areas remain isolated and unreachable.

Alongside Gia Lai province, Quang Ngai and Dak Lak were also severely affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc signed Decision No. 7/11/2025 to provide emergency funding to Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and Dak Lak provinces to recover from damages caused by the  typhoon.

Specifically, VND 80 billion from the 2025 central budget reserve will be provided to the three provinces to recover from flood-related damages and quickly stabilize residents’ lives.

The allocation is as follows: Quang Ngai province  (VND 20 billion), Gia Lai province (VND 30 billion), and Dak Lak province (VND 30 billion). The Ministry of Finance is responsible for reporting, proposing, and ensuring compliance with legal regulations.
