Kalmaegi makes landfall in Gia Lai, Dak Lak with high risk of flash floods and landslides

VOV.VN - Typhoon Kalmaegi struck Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces in Vietnam’s Central Highlands on the evening of November 6, producing gusts up to level 14 (135-149 km/h) and heavy rainfall.

Speaking to VOV, Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that since early afternoon, the typhoon’s outer bands had brought very strong winds to coastal areas in central Quang Ngai province and Gia Lai and Dak Lak.

Some meteorological stations recorded sustained winds at level 10 (75-88 km/h) with gusts up to level 14 (135-149 km/h), strong enough to pose serious risks to all activities and non-reinforced structures. Large waves and sea level rise were also observed along the coastal areas.

According to Khiem, typhoon Kalmaegi is expected to maintain strong winds over land, particularly in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Quang Ngai provinces, for at least the next two to three hours before weakening into a tropical depression.

The typhoon’s circulation will continue to bring heavy rainfall on the night of November 6 and during November 7, with totals forecasted at 200-300 mm, and locally higher in some areas. Such rainfall greatly increases the risk of flash floods and landslides in the western highlands, the south central coast, and central Vietnam, where the soil is already saturated.

The typhoon’s circulation will continue to bring heavy rainfall tonight and tomorrow, with totals forecasted at 200-300mm, and locally higher in some areas. Such rainfall significantly increases the risk of flash floods and landslides in the western highlands, the South Central Coast, and Central Vietnam, where the soil is already saturated, Khiem added.

He also warned that heavy rainfall may trigger riverine floods in Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and Dak Lak, reaching levels 2-3 on local alert scales. Reservoirs in these provinces need close monitoring as heavy rain continues.
