Two whales spotted hunting near Dak Lak coast
VOV.VN - Two whales were spotted near Mai Nha Islet off the coast of Phuoc Dong fishing village, Dak Lak province, on May 15, attracting significant attention from local residents and tourists.
The moment was recorded by a local resident, who was transporting visitors by boat when the whales were spotted.
According to the tour guide, at around 9am the two whales repeatedly surfaced before diving underwater to feed near Mai Nha Islet. He estimated the larger whale to be around 10m long, while the second measured approximately 6 to 7m.
Both whales were described as black in colour and remained close together while searching for food.
“They kept surfacing and diving repeatedly to catch prey,” he recalled.
Images of the whales moving through the calm coastal waters quickly drew excitement from tourists aboard sightseeing boats and local fishermen in the area.
This was not the first whale sighting recorded near Mai Nha Islet. In July 2024, another pair of whales was observed feeding in nearby waters.
Whales typically appear in areas with abundant food supplies and favourable marine environments, report local authorities.
The coastal waters stretching from Dak Lak and Gia Lai to Khanh Hoa are currently considered to have relatively clean waters and stable marine ecosystems, making the region an important migration corridor for various marine species.
In recent years, repeated whale sightings along Vietnam’s central coast have increasingly been viewed as a positive sign for marine ecology and natural fishery resources.
Residents and tourists are advised to maintain a safe distance when encountering whales at sea and avoid approaching or closely following the animals in order to protect their natural behaviour and ensure maritime safety.
