Rare whale pod of over 100 spotted near Phu Quy Island
VOV.VN - A large pod of whales, estimated to number more than 100, was spotted off the coast of Phu Quy Island on April 5, in what local divers described as a rare and remarkable encounter.
According to Nguyen Trong Tan, a local tour guide, the sighting occurred during a routine fishing and diving trip with local fishermen. The group encountered the whales about 500 meters from Hon Tranh islet.
“The whales surfaced continuously, swimming close to our boat before leaping out of the water,” Tan said. “When we cheered, even more appeared, creating an incredible scene.”
Several divers on board entered the water to capture footage. Despite the human presence, the whales stayed calm and continued swimming naturally, showing no signs of distress.
Local fishermen noted that sightings of such a large number of whales are uncommon in the area.
Earlier the same day, the group also spotted three blue whales measuring approximately 17 meters in length swimming past their boat. About 30 minutes later, they encountered the larger pod.
Marine experts and locals say the appearance of whales close to shore is a positive indicator of environmental conditions, suggesting that the waters around Phu Quy remain clean and rich in food sources.
The rare sighting highlights the ecological value of Vietnam’s coastal waters and underscores the importance of marine conservation efforts in the region.
