Giant whales repeatedly spotted off Lam Dong coast
VOV.VN - Residents in the coastal areas of Mui Ne and Lien Huong in Lam Dong province reported sightings of giant whales surfacing nearshore to hunt on April 23.
At Hon Lau in Mui Ne ward, a large whale was spotted about 800 metres from shore. Witnesses said the whale repeatedly dove deep before suddenly surfacing and opening its mouth to feed. Schools of seabirds were seen swooping over the water, a sign of abundant small fish in the area.
Locals and tourists stopped to watch the rare scene and used mobile phones to capture images of the whale feeding close to shore.
Meanwhile, in the Co Thach coastal waters of Lien Huong commune, another giant whale was seen repeatedly rolling at the surface before opening its mouth to hunt. The whale surfaced multiple times and swam for an extended period, creating an impressive display.
According to local residents, whales have been appearing more frequently in Lam Dong’s coastal waters recently, with reports of a pod of around 100 individuals swimming at the surface, causing considerable surprise.
The recurring presence of whales is said to be a positive sign, indicating abundant marine resources and improving coastal environmental conditions. For coastal fishing communities, whales, traditionally known as “Ca Ong”, are regarded as sacred creatures believed to bring good fortune when they appear.
