Tropical depression weakens, heavy rain and landslides remain on high alert

VOV.VN - The tropical depression has weakened into a low-pressure area over western Quang Tri province, with maximum sustained winds near its center dropping below 39 km/h.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, the system dissipated over western Quang Tri on the evening of September 13.

At 7:00 p.m., the center of the low-pressure area was located at approximately 17.3°N and 106.3°E, with maximum sustained winds near the center dropping below 39 km/h.

Over the next 12 hours, the system is forecast to move primarily west-northwestward at about 10 km/h, continuing to weaken and gradually dissipate.

Although the tropical depression has degraded, its trailing circulation continues to impact regional weather. Forecasters are tracking heavy rainfall and landslide risks spanning northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa, and Quang Tri through the night of September 13 and the days ahead.

Residents in areas vulnerable to inundation, flash floods, and landslides should monitor weather bulletins closely to respond promptly. Further updates on heavy rain and hazardous meteorological risks will follow in subsequent advisories.

Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa province is bracing for heavy downpours. Under an official dispatch issued by the provincial People's Committee chairman on September 13, Thanh Hoa has activated emergency response plans as moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to sweep across the province from the afternoon of September 13 through September 17.

Total rainfall across coastal plains and western and southwestern mountainous areas is projected between 150 mm and 300 mm, with isolated spots exceeding 400 mm, while other areas expect 100 mm to 200 mm. Peak rainfall is concentrated from September 14 to the morning of September 16, threatening urban inundation, flash floods on small streams, landslides along slopes, and river floods with an expected water level rise of 2 to 5 meters.

Local authorities have been directed to closely monitor the weather, evacuate residents from high-risk zones prone to landslides and flash floods, paying special attention to previously affected areas, and manage coastal vessel operations to ensure safety.

Emergency measures also require inspecting dikes, reservoirs, and active construction sites, clearing drainage systems to prevent blockages, stationing personnel at deep-water crossings and flooded routes, and stocking up on essentials for areas at risk of isolation.
