Tropical depression in East Sea forecast to strengthen into storm within 24 hours
VOV.VN - A tropical depression over China's Hainan Island is moving eastward and forecast to intensify into a storm within the next 24 hours, bringing strong winds and rough seas to the northern area of the East Sea, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
At 1:00 p.m. on August 31, the center of the tropical depression was located at around 19.5°N latitude and 110.3°E longitude over Hainan Island. Maximum winds near the center reached level 7 (50-61 km/h), with gusts up to level 9. The system was moving southward at about 15 km/h.
Forecasts indicate that by 1:00 p.m. on September 1, the system will move east at 15-20 km/h to around 19.6°N latitude and 114.2°E longitude in the northern sea area of the East Sea. It is likely to strengthen into a storm with level 8 winds and gusts up to level 10.
The dangerous zone in the North East Sea is designated north of 18.0°N latitude and between 109.5°E and 115.5°E longitude. A level 3 disaster risk warning has been issued for the northern area of the East Sea.
Over the following 48 to 72 hours, the system is forecast to move northeast at about 10 km/h while gradually weakening back into a tropical depression.
Due to the weather system, the northern sea area of the East Sea will experience strong winds of level 6-7 (39-61 km/h), gusting to level 8-9, with waves 2.0-4.0 meters high.
Areas near the center will see level 8 winds, gusts up to level 10, and waves reaching 3.0-5.0 meters, creating very rough seas. All vessels operating in these high-risk zones face severe threats from thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong winds, and heavy waves.
The National Civil Defense Steering Committee has instructed coastal localities to closely monitor developments, count and manage operating vessels, and promptly notify ship captains and vessel owners to proactively clear dangerous areas. Localities must also maintain rescue forces and equipment on standby while stepping up warning information to the public.
