Tropical depression likely to strengthen into storm in East Sea

VOV.VN - A tropical depression in the northeastern part of the East Sea is expected to intensify into a storm from September 18, threatening central and southern Vietnam with strong winds, rough seas and torrential rain.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7 a.m. on September 7, the tropical depression was churning over the eastern waters of the Philippines’ Luzon Island, packing maximum sustained winds of 50–61kph. The tropical depression was moving northwest at around 15kph.

Meteorologists warned that the depression could intensify into a storm by 7 a.m. on September 18, and gain further strength.

Due to the impact of the tropical depression, the northeastern area of the East Sea will be affected starting the evening of September 17. Wind speeds are expected to gradually increase to 39–49kph, with waves reaching 2.5–4.5 meters and rough sea conditions. Vessels operating in the danger zone may encounter storms, whirlwinds, strong winds, and high waves.

On September 17, scattered showers and thunderstorms are also forecast across the northern, central, and southern parts of the East Sea, including the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, the Gulf of Tonkin, and the waters from Quang Tri to Ca Mau, as well as the Gulf of Thailand.
