Swedish Embassy hands over 1,000 helmets to Vietnamese children
VOV.VN - The Embassy of Sweden in Vietnam on November 21 presented a total of 1,000 free helmets to primary and secondary students of Nam Trung Yen Primary School in Cau Giay district in Hanoi.
The activity is part of a series of events to celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations (1969 - 2024).
The function aims to make the community and parents more aware of the need for children to don safety helmets whilst travelling by motorbike or electric bicycle.
Upon addressing the event, Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Johan Ndisi highlighted motorbikes as the major means of transport in Vietnam, with helmets being an effective form of protection for both children and adults.
While there has been a high level of compliance with mandatory helmet regulation among adults, helmet use among children remains low. Therefore, wearing a high-quality helmet properly can save lives, the Swedish diplomat emphasized, adding that road safety is a major public health issue in the country.
According to the statistics compiled by the National Traffic Safety Committee, road crashes are the number one cause of death for young people aged 15 to 29.
In line with this, the first half of the year saw approximately 5,250 people lose their lives and 9,600 suffer from injuries caused by road crashes.
