PM requests prompt response measures as Super typhoon Yagi moves close to mainland

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 5 asked relevant ministries, agencies and localities to resolutely, promptly, and effectively implement response measures as super typhoon Yagi is moving closer to northern Vietnam, in an effort to ensure the safety of lives, especially children and vulnerable groups, and to minimize damage to property of the State and people.

In an urgent dispatch to the designated agencies, he requested that all localities to be affected by Yagi postpone unnecessary meetings and pool all resources to deal with the super typhoon, with a primary focus on the safety of residents in danger areas, especially areas at risk of severe flooding due to high waves, storm surges, heavy rain, and flooding, and areas vulnerable to landslides or flash floods.

It is crucial to ensure that people do not remain in danger areas where the storm directly impacts and heavy rainfall occurs. If necessary, proactive measures should be put in place to forcibly relocate people to ensure their safety, reads the telegram.

The PM reminded that the leaders of localities, organizations, and agencies that are negligent or complacent in carrying out storm and flood prevention and response duties will be subject to a review of responsibilities.

Yagi strengthened into a super typhoon level on September 5 afternoon, with winds gusting 201kph near its centre, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The super typhoon is forecast to move into the Gulf of Tonkin on September 6 morning and slam into the mainland in the north-eastern and north-central regions in the early morning of September 7. Due to its force, Yagi will certainly cause strong winds, storm surges, and high waves at sea and along the coast, as well as strong winds and widespread heavy rain on land.

Yagi, the third to hit Vietnam this year’s stormy season, is considered the most powerful storm to pound Vietnam in 10 years. It is anticipated to heavily impact coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa.
