Traffic accidents claim 34 lives on first day of Lunar New Year holiday
VOV.VN - 52 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide on February 14, the first day of the Lunar New Year 2026 holiday, resulting in 34 deaths and 31 injuries, according to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.
Compared to the same holiday period in 2025, the number of accidents decreased by 18 cases (down 27.7%), fatalities decreased by eight (down 20.9%), and injuries fell by six (down 18.4%).
All reported accidents occurred on roadways, while no incidents were recorded on railway or inland waterway routes.
Regarding traffic enforcement, local police forces handled 10,013 violations nationwide. Authorities temporarily impounded 101 cars, 2,496 motorcycles and 102 other vehicles; revoked 283 driving licences and deducted licence points in 1,668 cases.
Among the violations detected were 2,145 cases involving drink-driving, six drug-related offences, 2,219 speeding violations, 26 cases of overloading, 117 cases of carrying excess passengers, and 56 cases of mobile phone use while driving.
Traffic patrol units on expressways directly handled 45 violations and, through technical surveillance systems, issued notifications to 200 vehicle owners.
On inland waterways, authorities detected and penalised seven violations, with fines exceeding VND17 million. Five violations were recorded on railway routes, with fines totalling over VND2 million.
In addition, the Traffic Police Department identified 5,260 cases showing signs of violations through nationwide camera surveillance systems, of which penalty notices were sent to 1,119 vehicle owners.
