Series of earthquakes hit Quang Ngai in one day
VOV.VN - A series of six earthquakes struck several communes in central Quang Ngai province on the morning of May 11, including one tremor measuring 3.7 in magnitude.
According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Earth Sciences, the earthquakes occurred in the communes of Mang But, Mang Den, Mang Ri and Kon Plong.
The recorded tremors ranged from magnitudes 2.6 to 3.7. Three of the earthquakes occurred in Mang Den commune at 3:42:30 a.m., 3:43:00 a.m. and 10:34:18 p.m. on May 11, with magnitudes of 2.6, 2.8 and 3.7 respectively.
On the same day, additional earthquakes measuring between 2.6 and 3.2 on the Richter scale were recorded in Mang Ri, Kon Plong and Mang But communes.
Under Vietnam’s natural disaster risk classification system, all six earthquakes were classified at level 0, posing no disaster risk at all.
The Institute of Earth Sciences said the tremors were identified as induced earthquakes, a type of seismic activity closely linked to reservoir water accumulation.
According to experts, induced earthquakes often occur cyclically, with periods of weak seismic activity alternating with periods of more frequent tremors.
Seismologists advised residents to remain calm during earthquakes and seek shelter by holding onto sturdy door frames or taking cover under strong tables if indoors.
People outdoors were advised to stay away from power lines and utility poles and move to open spaces. Drivers were also urged to pull over safely and stop their vehicles if tremors occur while travelling.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre said it is continuing to monitor seismic activity in the area.
