Quang Ngai records two more earthquakes as monitoring continues
VOV.VN - Two earthquakes measuring 2.9 and 3.0 in magnitude struck Mang But commune in central Quang Ngai province early on October 20, following a magnitude-2.7 tremor in the same area on October 19.
All the quakes were assigned a natural disaster risk level of zero, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Earth Sciences said.
The first earthquake occurred at 4:36:01am on October 20, with a magnitude of 2.9 and a focal depth of approximately 8.1km. A second earthquake struck the area at 6:04:05am the same day, registering a magnitude of 3.0 and a focal depth of around 8.2km.
Earlier, at 11:03:43am on October 19, a magnitude-2.7 earthquake was recorded in Mang But, with a focal depth of approximately 8.1km. The area also experienced several earthquakes on October 18, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.5.
Scientists from the Institute of Earth Sciences have identified earthquakes in Quang Ngai, in the area formerly known as Kon Tum province, as induced seismic events associated with hydropower reservoirs. Such activity has been recorded in the area over recent years and typically occurs in sequences comprising multiple earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
Meanwhile, northern Son La province recorded two earthquakes in Ta Hoc commune early on October 19, measuring 2.6 and 4.2 in magnitude. According to experts from the Institute of Earth Sciences, the earthquakes in Son La were tectonic, associated with geological activity and movement along faults in the Earth’s crust.
The earthquakes in the two areas therefore have different underlying mechanisms.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre, under the Institute of Earth Sciences of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, continues to monitor seismic activity in both areas to update information, assess potential risks and issue warnings when necessary.
