Powerful Typhoon Kajiki nears central Vietnam, 180 km off Quang Tri
VOV.VN - Typhoon Kajiki, the fifth storm to hit Vietnam this year, was located about 180 km off central Quang Tri province early on August 25, with maximum sustained winds of level 14 (150-166 km/h) and gusts reaching level 17.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the eye of Typhoon Kajiki, the fifth storm to hit Vietnam this year, was about 180 km east-northeast of northern Quang Tri and 200 km off Ha Tinh early on August 25. The storm packed maximum sustained winds of 150–166 km/h, with gusts up to 200 km/h, and was moving west-northwest at 15-20 km/h.
Strong winds have already been recorded on several islands and coastal stations, including Bach Long Vi, Co To, Phu Quy, Con Co, Truong Sa and Ly Son.
During the day and night of August 25, coastal provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue are forecast to experience winds of 90–150 km/h, with gusts up to 200 km/h near the storm’s center. Seas will be extremely rough, with waves of 5–10 meters. Rough seas and high waves of 2–5 meters are also expected in the Gulf of Tonkin, the central coast and southern waters.

In addition to strong winds, Typhoon Kajiki is bringing widespread heavy rain. Rainfall of 200–400 mm is forecast from Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri, with some areas expected to exceed 700 mm. In the Red River Delta, northern midlands, Lao Cai, southern Quang Tri and Hue, totals of 100–150 mm are expected, with some areas topping 250 mm. Other parts of central Vietnam, the Central Highlands and the south will also see scattered thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours.
Authorities warned of flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides in mountainous terrain.
In response, the Chairman of Thanh Hoa province has issued an urgent telegram, urging localities to take urgent measures to ensure safety for residents and vessels at sea.
