PM orders urgent response as powerful typhoon Kajiki threatens Vietnam

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on August 23 signed a telegram, requiring relevant ministries, sectors, and localities to urgently respond to Typhoon Kajiki which is expected to pound central and north-central coastal provinces on August 25.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Kajiki, the fifth to hit the East Sea this year, is rapidly intensifying, moving at around 25 kmh, with winds gusting more than 150kph.

In the telegram, the PM requested mobilising the entire political system, postponing non-essential tasks, and focusing all efforts on disaster preparedness.

A number of ministries in charge of national defence, public security, agriculture & environment, construction, industry & trade, health, and education, as well as media agencies were asked to strengthen communication, ensure infrastructure safety, maintain supply chains, protect reservoirs and dams, and provide accurate information for residents.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Ministry of National Defence were tasked with sending working groups to key coastal provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Quang Tri.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha was assigned to continue directing the implementation of this telegram.

Meteorologists say the severity of Typhoon Kajiki is forecast to be no less than that of Typhoon Yagi in 2024 in terms of wind strength, and it may even surpass Typhoon Doksuri in 2017, which had a similar path and affected areas.

Typhoon Yagi slammed into Vietnam in September 2024, leaving more than 300 people dead, missing, or injured, and causing an estimated loss of approximately US$3.3 billion. In addition, over 234,000 houses and 1,500 schools were damaged or destroyed, along with hundreds of kilometers of dikes severely affected. Agricultural losses were also immense, heavily impacting both production and livelihoods.
