Central coastal localities on high alert as typhoon Kajiki approaches

VOV.VN - Authorities in central and north-central coastal provinces of Vietnam have activated emergency measures as Typhoon Kajiki, packing winds exceeding 100 km/h and gusts up to 150 km/h, approaches the region.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, Kajiki is gaining force and is forecast to make landfall across central and north-central coastal provinces on August 25.

From August 24 to 27, heavy rainfall is expected along the coasts, with some areas experiencing severe downpours. Coastal plains and western mountainous regions face high risks of flash floods, landslides, and inundation in low-lying areas, riverside zones, and urban centres.

In Hue City, authorities have instructed all vessels to seek shelter by 7 p.m. on August 23, while reviewing evacuation plans, assisting farmers with rice harvests, inspecting reservoirs, and reinforcing fish farms.

The Department of Construction is checking high-rise buildings and construction sites, and electricity authorities are advising residents on safety measures. Schools, universities, tourism facilities, and outdoor campsites have activated protection plans, while early warning systems, including the Hue-S app, hotline 19001075, and smart broadcasting, have been mobilised.

Ha Tinh province plans to discharge water from seven major reservoirs starting 9 a.m. on August 24 to reduce pressure and minimize downstream flooding.

Rainfall in Ha Tinh is forecast at 150–300 mm, with some areas exceeding 600 mm. The two largest reservoirs, Ngan Truoi and Ke Go, remain at relatively low water levels, but operators are closely monitoring conditions for timely operational adjustments.

The military, maritime authorities, and local administrations are coordinating to ensure vessels are safely anchored, rescue forces are on standby, and communes take responsibility for disaster preparedness.

In Nghe An, fishing boats are returning to ports such as Cua Lo, Lach Quen, and Quynh Phuong. Border guards have warned offshore vessels to leave danger zones and avoid remaining at sea during the storm.

Major General Hoang Duy Chien, Deputy Commander of Military Region 4, inspected storm preparations in Cua Lo on August 23, directing units to monitor developments closely and take proactive measures.

In Quang Tri, the Provincial People’s Committee held a conference on preparations for Typhoon Kajiki, both in-person and online with 78 communes, wards, and special zones on August 23.

According to the provincial Civil Defence Command, nearly 8,100 out of 8,725 fishing vessels in Quang Tri have returned safely to shore, while the remaining 634 still operating at sea have all received storm updates. Several dams and dikes are generally safe, but nearly 36,600 hectares of summer–autumn rice remain unharvested, posing high risk of damage if heavy rain persists.

Provincial leaders stressed that localities must strictly implement the on-site prevention measures, strengthen public warnings, reinforce houses, put up danger signs at low-water crossings, and quickly harvest ripe rice. Reservoir operators and irrigation project managers must have emergency response plans, while strict dike protection is required in vulnerable areas.

On August 23, the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee issued a directive, ordering the entire political system to mobilise all resources in response to typhoon Kajiki. Relevant forces were told to closely monitor the storm, manage vessels at sea, and evacuate people from fish farms and watch posts.

The directive also requested reviewing flashflood and landslide scenarios, reinforcing dykes and reservoirs, and ensuring the safety of industrial zones, tourist sites, power grids, and telecom networks. Rescue forces were placed on standby to respond quickly and minimise damage as the powerful typhoon is expected to hit the central region on August 25.
