One killed in homemade firecracker explosion in northern Vietnam
VOV.VN - A loud explosion, suspected to have been caused by homemade firecrackers, occurred at a two-storey house in Hung Yen province on February 10, killing one man and causing significant damage to the building, local authorities said.
The blast completely collapsed the second floor of the house and shook nearby structures in An Ba village, An Thi commune.
The victim, a man born in 1994, was killed at the scene, and several surrounding buildings were also damaged, said local authorities.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion.
Although Vietnam has long banned the production, trading, storage and use of explosive firecrackers under current law, cases involving homemade firecrackers continue to occur in practice, particularly in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year.
Authorities warn that making explosive firecrackers is not only illegal but also poses serious safety risks to those involved and to surrounding communities. In the days ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year, police in Dak Lak province issued warnings over cases of teenagers attempting to make firecrackers at home, raising concerns about potential injuries and severe consequences.
In recent years, several accidents linked to homemade firecrackers have been recorded in other localities. In Quang Ngai province in January 2025, a 17-year-old student was killed when a homemade firecracker exploded during the manufacturing process at home. In former Quang Nam province (now part of Da Nang city) in February 2024, two teenagers were seriously injured while making explosive fireworks.
Competent agencies nationwide have continued to step up public awareness campaigns, inspections and enforcement against the illegal production and use of firecrackers, while calling for closer coordination between families and schools to prevent accidents caused by experimenting with explosive materials.
