Minor earthquake recorded in Lai Chau, no damage or casualties reported
VOV.VN - A minor earthquake was recorded in Lai Chau province in northern Vietnam on the morning of March 20, with no casualties or damage reported.
According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the 2.5 magnitude earthquake hit Bum Nua commune at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
The earthquake was classified at disaster risk level 0, indicating no impact on people or property. Authorities said they are continuing to monitor developments to ensure public safety.
Northwest Vietnam, including Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La provinces, lies near active geological fault lines, where minor to moderate earthquakes are occasionally recorded. Although Vietnam is not located along major tectonic plate boundaries, the region has experienced earthquakes capable of causing noticeable tremors and moderate damage.
In May 2025, a magnitude 4.0–5.0 earthquake struck Dien Bien province, with tremors felt in surrounding areas, including Lai Chau, though no significant damage was reported.
The Son La–Dien Bien–Lai Chau fault zone has historically generated stronger earthquakes, including events reaching magnitudes of 6.0 to 6.8, such as the 1983 Tuan Giao earthquake and a major quake in Dien Bien in 1935.
Experts say that while small earthquakes like the latest event typically do not cause damage, they play an important role in monitoring geological activity and improving early warning capabilities in the region.
