Local authorities meet OVs ahead of Lunar New Year

Local authorities nationwide greeted overseas Vietnamese who returned home for the upcoming Lunar New Year festival.

At a programme in the northern province of Thai Nguyen on January 19, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Vu Hong Bac extended New Year wishes to foreign businesses, workers, non-governmental organisations, students and Vietnamese expatriates living and working in the province.

He informed them that the provincial economy grew 15.2% last year, with industrial production value surpassing VND477 trillion (US$20.7 billion), up 26.7% annually. Export value topped US$19 billion while revenues to the State budget hit more than VND9.6 trillion (US$417.3 million).

The province licensed more than 20 foreign-invested projects worth nearly US$133 million, bringing the total number of foreign direct investment projects to 116.

The same day in Quy Nhon city, the central province of Binh Dinh, 140 overseas Vietnamese attended a get-together.

Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Ho Quoc Dung updated them about local socio-economic development, saying that the province recorded a 7.53% increase in gross regional domestic product, US$730.5 million worth of exports and 29,715 new jobs.

Overseas Vietnamese and their relatives invested in four projects in the locality, he said.

Similar events also took place in the central province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Overseas remittances from Vietnamese expatriates to Ba Ria - Vung Tau neared US$100 million each year.
