Heavy rains ease in northern Vietnam, may return early Oct. 8

VOV.VN - Heavy rains that hit northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, began to ease gradually from the afternoon of October 7, though moderate showers may return to the northeast early October 8, according to Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecasting Department at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Huong said the recent heavy rains resulted from the combined effects of the circulation of typhoon Matmo and moist southeasterly winds from the subtropical high, creating a convergence zone stretching across the northeastern provinces.  Northern Thai Nguyen province and Hanoi recorded particularly high rainfall levels.

Several gauges registered extremely heavy rainfall: over 450 mm in parts of Thai Nguyen; 348 mm at Bo Ha in northern Bac Ninh province; 261.6 mm at Me Tri area and 242.4 mm at Soc Son area in Hanoi. These figures, Huong note, indicate localized extreme rainfall.

Comparing the latest downpour with the one on September 30, Huong said both shared similar causes, post-storm convergence combined with moist southeasterly winds, but differed in duration and distribution. The September 30 event lasted from early morning to late afternoon, leading to wider flooding, while the October 7 rain concentrated mainly in the morning.

Hourly rainfall intensity was comparable, with 101.4 mm/h recorded at Dinh Cong area on September 30 and 108.2 mm/h at Me Tri on October 7, though more stations exceeded 100 mm/24 h during the earlier event.

In the short term, Huong said the convergence zone is weakening, and the north is expected to continue experiencing moderate to heavy rain on the afternoon of October 7, with rainfall ranging from 30–60 mm in Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen and Hanoi, and over 100 mm in some areas; elsewhere, totals are expected around 20-30 mm. Rain is likely to subside later but could return early on October 8 in the northeast.

For the short-term forecast, Huong stated that the convergence zone is weakening, so the north is expected to continue experiencing moderate to heavy rain on the afternoon of October 7, with rainfall ranging from 30-60 mm in Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen and Hanoi, and over 100 mm in some areas; elsewhere, totals are expected around 20-30 mm. Rain is likely to subside later but could return early on October 8 in the northeast.

Regarding hydrology, from October 7-10 water levels on rivers in the northern region and Thanh Hoa are forecast to keep rising. Peak floods on several rivers, including those in Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, the Luc Nam River (Bac Ninh), and the Thai Binh River (Hai Phong), may reach or exceed alarm levels 2-3. Flood peaks on the Thao (Lao Cai), Lo (Tuyen Quang), Hoang Long (Ninh Binh), and upper Ma (Thanh Hoa) rivers are likely around levels 1-2, with some possibly surpassing level 2. Water levels at Hoa Binh Reservoir and the downstream Red River in Hanoi may exceed level 1.

Huong warned of widespread flooding in Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang provinces and low-lying areas along rivers, along with high risks of flash floods and landslides in northern mountainous provinces and Thanh Hoa. Residents are advised to follow official warnings, avoid inundated zones, and comply with safety instructions from authorities.
