Heavy rains trigger localized flooding in Yen Bai and Lao Cai

VOV.VN - Heavy downpours overnight and into the morning of May 23 caused localized flooding in some areas of northern mountainous Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces, disrupting traffic and damaging property.

In Yen Bai city, intense rainfall early in the morning inundated several roads, including Kim Dong and Le Van Tam streets, and the intersection near Km4 on Quang Trung Street, making travel difficult during peak hours. The flooding was attributed to a combination of heavy water flow and drainage systems clogged since Storm Yagi last year, which have yet to be cleared.

Numerous districts also recorded heavy rainfall. In Tan Phuong Commune, Luc Yen District, more than 135mm of rain caused a temporary construction bridge to be washed away, briefly cutting off access to the district center. Rising water levels in streams and creeks submerged low crossings, thereby affecting local transportation.

The provincial disaster response committee has warned of continued moderate to heavy rains and instructed local authorities to stay alert and prepare necessary response measures.

In Lao Cai, widespread rains triggered by a low-pressure trough and upper-level wind convergence also caused severe disruptions. Some areas recorded over 100mm of rain. Initial assessments report nearly two hectares of crops submerged, major erosion along roads in Van Ban District, and the loss of a temporary bridge in Sim San Commune, Bat Xat district, isolating three villages.

Estimated damage as of 9 a.m. on May 23 stood at around VND 500 million.

More heavy rain is expected throughout the day and night in parts of the province. Authorities have issued safety warnings and urged residents to reinforce homes, stay indoors during the severe weather and closely follow official updates to ensure safety.
