Heavy rain poses severe risk of flooding and landslides in central region

VOV.VN - With storm No. 4 weakening into a tropical low-pressure zone, several central localities will continue to experience heavy downpours with a high risk of flash floods and landslides occurring, especially in the mountainous areas from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Vu Anh Tuan, deputy head of the centre’s Weather Forecast Department, said that as of 4:00 p.m. on September 19, storm No. 4 had moved to the mainland of provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri, causing strong winds and gusts of up to level 10.

Heavy downpours occurred in localities from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien – Hue, with rainfall measuring between 100mm and 200 mm.

Apart from the risks of flash floods and landslides in mountainous provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri, heavy spells of rain have caused water levels in the river areas from Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, and Quang Tri to rise significantly.

Furthermore, there is also the possibility of severe flooding occurring in urban areas, especially in places with large populations, Tuan added. Responding to the storm circulation, Quang Binh province evacuated nearly 3,000 households in areas prone to landslides and severe flooding on the evening of September 19.

The total amount of rainfall in the locality was measured at over 250mm. At some bridges in the mountainous district of Minh Hoa, the level of flooding rose from 0.5 metres to one metre high, causing key roads to be cut off and isolated, thereby preventing vehicles from passing through.
