Health Ministry issues urgent notice over risk of Nipah virus

VOV.VN - The Department of Medical Services Administration under the Ministry of Health issued an urgent notice late on January 27 in response to the risk of the Nipah virus entering Vietnam, requesting healthcare facilities nationwide to strengthen proactive disease prevention and control measures.

According to the Department of Medical Services Administration, Nipah virus disease is classified as a Group A infectious disease, with reported case fatality rates ranging from 40% to 75%. There is currently no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment available.

The virus is transmitted mainly from animals to humans or through contact with contaminated objects or food, and can also spread from person to person through direct contact with a patient’s bodily fluids or secretions. The incubation period typically ranges from four to 14 days. Infected individuals may experience symptoms such as headache, muscle pain, vomiting and sore throat, followed by dizziness, drowsiness, altered consciousness and neurological signs indicative of acute encephalitis.

According to the infectious disease surveillance system, India reported five suspected cases of Nipah virus infection between December 27, 2025 and January 26, 2026, including two laboratory-confirmed cases at a hospital in the state of West Bengal.

In response to the risk of Nipah virus disease entering Vietnam and following instructions from the Ministry of Health’s leadership, the Department of Medical Services Administration asked healthcare facilities under the Ministry of Health, health units of ministries and sectors, and provincial and municipal health departments to instruct their affiliated medical facilities to implement a range of preventive measures.

Specifically, medical units are required to step up disease prevention and control efforts and strictly apply personal protective measures for healthcare workers and individuals who have had close contact with suspected or confirmed Nipah cases. Particular attention is to be paid to people who have recently entered Vietnam or returned from countries where cases have been reported within the past 14 days.

Healthcare facilities are also required to tighten infection prevention and control, strengthen inspection and monitoring, and strictly isolate all suspected or confirmed Nipah cases at treatment facilities.

The Department of Medical Services Administration also instructed units to regularly monitor and update information on the global disease situation, while strengthening public communication to ensure accurate understanding, prevent unnecessary public concern and support the adoption of preventive measures.

Healthcare facilities are also required to promptly detect suspected cases to ensure timely isolation, diagnosis and treatment, and to prevent community transmission.
