HCM City to welcome 1,000 Overseas Vietnamese for Tet reunion

VOV.VN - Around 1,000 Overseas Vietnamese will join a gathering on February 5-6 to celebrate the coming Lunar New Year 2026 (Tet), providing them an opportunity to find out about Vietnamese policies in various fields, and contribute ideas to the city’s development.

The annual event is to show the municipal administration’s concern and create a warm gathering space for the Vietnamese community abroad during the traditional Tet festival, the largest in a year.

During the function, Ho Chi Minh City leaders will share information with the expatriates about the socio-economic situation and the results of the first Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress.

As 2026 is the first year of the five-year socio-economic development plan (2026-2030), the meeting aims to strengthen the bond between the government and overseas Vietnamese. The city leaders will provide information on policies, achievements of the past year, and development directions for the new period.

Delegates will immerse themselves in the traditional Tet atmosphere with cultural and artistic activities, enjoy local cuisine, and visit a fair.

An exhibition to showcase the outstanding contributions of overseas Vietnamese will be held. Besides the city leaders will visit and send New Year greetings to exemplary overseas Vietnamese delegates and their families in the city.

Ho Chi Minh City continues to affirm its position as Vietnam’s largest recipient of remittances, with inflows rising steadily in recent years. According to the State Bank of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City branch, remittances to the city reached an estimated US$9.6 billion in 2024, accounting for more than half of the country’s total remittance inflows.

In 2025, remittances to the city are projected to increase further to around US$$10.3–10.5 billion, reflecting the growing confidence of overseas Vietnamese in Vietnam’s investment and business environment as well as the city’s development prospects.

Remittances are sourced from traditional markets such as the United States, Europe, Australia and other Asian countries. These inflows help stabilise the foreign exchange market, boost foreign currency reserves, and provide important support for consumption, investment, production, business activities and socio-economic development in Ho Chi Minh City.
