HCM City invests in steel flyovers to ease traffic bottlenecks

VOV.VN - After years of proving effective in reducing congestion at major traffic hotspots, steel flyovers are once again being prioritised by Ho Chi Minh City as a key solution to mounting urban traffic pressure.

As rapid urbanisation, rising vehicle density and growing inter-regional connectivity continue to strain the city’s transport network, authorities are implementing multiple measures to ease congestion. Alongside traffic flow adjustments on key roads, the city is accelerating investment in new transport infrastructure to gradually address long-standing bottlenecks.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, newly introduced traffic organisation plans on Cong Hoa Street and around the Nguyen Binh Khiem roundabout in May have shown initial positive results. Traffic flow has improved, while authorities have been able to respond more effectively to emerging traffic situations.

However, city transport officials believe such traffic management measures can only provide short-term relief. In the long run, investment in new transport infrastructure remains the most fundamental solution for overloaded intersections.

Experience from the 2010–2020 period showed that steel flyovers were among the city’s most effective anti-congestion measures. Traffic hotspots such as Hang Xanh, Thu Duc Intersection, Nguyen Kiem–Pham Van Dong, Cay Go, Lang Cha Ca, Hoang Hoa Tham and Go Vap Six-Way Intersection all recorded significant improvements after flyovers were put into operation.

Statistics show congestion levels in several areas fell by 70–80% compared to the period before the projects were completed. That success has become an important basis for expanding the model in the coming years.

As a result, on its list of urgent transport projects for the 2026–2030 period, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has proposed adding seven new steel flyovers at major high-traffic intersections.

One of the most notable projects in the inner city is a steel flyover planned for the Dan Chu Roundabout intersection. The structure is designed to create a direct connection between Vo Thi Sau Street and Ba Thang Hai Street, stretching more than 250 meters with an estimated investment of over VND281 billion. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce pressure on one of the most complex intersections in the city center.

Nearby, two additional intersections along the Ba Thang Hai corridor are also included in the investment plan. The proposed flyover at the Ba Thang Hai–Le Dai Hanh intersection would span approximately 480m with an estimated investment of more than VND404 billion. Another flyover at the Ba Thang Hai–Ly Thuong Kiet intersection, though smaller in scale, is also expected to significantly improve traffic flow on the frequently overloaded route.

Beyond the city centre, regional gateway areas are receiving particular attention. Along National Highway 51, two new steel flyovers have been proposed near the Ho Chi Minh City–Dong Nai border and the connection to My Xuan Industrial Park. These locations play a key role in freight transportation and regional connectivity within southern Vietnam’s key economic zone.

The investment list also includes an flyover at the Cach Mang Thang Tam–Huynh Van Cu intersection and another on DT.994C Road intersecting with 30/04 Street near Eo Ong Tu area.

Under the city’s plan, investment procedures for the projects will be accelerated, with construction expected to begin in the near future and completion targeted for 2027.

The continued focus on steel flyovers highlights Ho Chi Minh City’s confidence in a solution that has already been tested in practice. As travel demand and freight transport continue to rise, the projects are expected not only to ease existing congestion but also to create more room for sustainable urban growth in Vietnam’s largest city.
