HCM City to mark 50 years of its current name with cultural events, fireworks
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City will stage a broad array of cultural, artistic, sporting and exhibition activities, including a fireworks display, to mark the 50th anniversary of the city officially taking the name of President Ho Chi Minh on July 2, 1976.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's online portal, a photo exhibition commemorating the anniversary will run from July 1 to 11, 2026 at several locations across the city.
Major exhibition venues will include Dong Khoi Street, Nguyen Du Park and other cultural sites. Displays and promotional activities will also be held at Ho Chi Minh cultural spaces, residential areas, industrial parks and community venues.
On July 2, the anniversary day, the city will hold a flower-offering ceremony at the President Ho Chi Minh Statue Park and Nguyen Hue Street. An official commemoration ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. at Reunification Hall.
A range of cultural, artistic and sporting activities will also take place, including a community walk on Le Duan Street on June 28, a music programme titled “Ho Chi Minh City – Glorious in His Name”, and artistic performances accompanied by international 3D mapping showcases and exchanges from July 1 to 5 in front of the city People's Committee headquarters.
A special live television programme marking the anniversary will be launched on the evening of July 2, linking Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh City with Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, along with additional broadcast locations across the city.
As part of the celebrations, the city also plans to launch a circus and puppet production at the Phu Tho Circus and Multi-Purpose Performance Theatre, while a 15-minute fireworks display from 9 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on July 2 will be the highlight of the celebrations.
High-altitude fireworks are planned at three locations, including the Saigon River Tunnel area, the central area of the new urban centre, and Tam Thang Tower Square. Additional low-altitude displays are also expected to be arranged across the city to serve residents and visitors.
