“Hanoi Climate Talks” gets underway in Hanoi
VOV.VN - The German Embassy in Hanoi, working in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Academy of Journalism and Communication, hosted “Youth Engagement in Vietnam’s Just Transition” on October 9, the third edition of the “Hanoi Climate Talks” series aimed at addressing various climate change-related topics.
The event featured a panel discussion and an exhibition showcasing the various work of young Vietnamese people on issues related to climate change. It highlighted the critical role of young people in driving climate action, advocating for sustainable practices, and shaping a just future for the good of their communities.
“Due to global warming, children born today are likely to face seven times more extreme weather events than their grandparents. Typhoon Yagi is one recent tragic example. Therefore, youth participation is key when it comes to addressing climate change,” said Simon Kreye, deputy ambassador of Germany.
According to the diplomat, young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, and engaging the youth in decision-making processes ensures that policies reflect the needs of future generations.
He called on all stakeholders, including youth, to get involved in actions to realise the net zero commitments.
“Achieving net-zero, here in Vietnam, in Germany and across the world is possible if all actors play along. We need the active engagement of young people,” he suggested.
Delegates learned about the current stage of Vietnam’s energy transition, thereby raising awareness of the necessity for climate action in one of the countries most affected by climate change, whilst also empowering participants to get more involved.
At the event, young climate ambassadors from the Green Youth Labs project, a training and innovation programme funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and a representative from MONRE (Department of Climate Change), commented on the presentations and provided an outlook on the Government's plan to realise the Just Energy Transition Partnership, helping to facilitate dialogue between young people and policymakers.
Following the panel discussion, an exhibition was held, showcasing contributions made by youth representatives towards Vietnam's climate action and their innovative ideas, thus fostering a shared commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
