On February 13, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet and his delegation paid a working visit to the Institute of Oceanography, part of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa province.
Professor Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, provided an overview of both the academy and the Institute of Oceanography, highlighting France’s valuable contributions to training and ensuring high-quality human resources.
He noted that the institute has engaged in extensive international cooperation on oceanographic research, with France playing a key role in studies on the environment, plastic waste, and harmful bacteria. These research efforts have significantly contributed to marine education and the institute’s development.
Minh expressed hope for further advancements in Vietnam-France scientific cooperation, particularly in marine science, oceanography, and space research. He also underlined the importance of supporting young Vietnamese researchers and PhD candidates studying in France.
Nguyen Tan Tuan, Chairman of the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee, acknowledged the Institute of Oceanography’s contributions to the province’s socio-economic development. He expressed confidence that the institute would continue to play a crucial role in sustainable growth, particularly in alignment with Resolution No. 09, issued by the Politburo on January 28, 2022, which outlines Khanh Hoa’s development strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2045.
Ambassador Brochet laid stress on the significance of his visit, reaffirming the strong bilateral ties between Vietnam and France, which have deepened since the establishment of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
He stated scientific collaboration between France and Vietnam dates back to the early days. When the Institute of Oceanography was established in 1922, French scientists were involved in research and provided support.
The French diplomat also highlighted that Nha Trang is home to the Pasteur Institute, where the late Dr. Alexandre Yersin once worked. France pledges to boost scientific collaboration with Vietnam, particularly in training PhD researchers. Additionally, the two countries are working toward establishing a joint marine and climate observation station in Binh Dinh province.
Founded over a century ago, the Institute of Oceanography is one of the two earliest scientific research institutions established by the French in Indochina. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in preserving biodiversity, spurring sustainable marine economic development, and enhancing social welfare in Khanh Hoa province.
