Four bears rescued transferred to Bach Ma National Park for rehabilitation
VOV.VN - Four bears kept in captivity for many years in Ho Chi Minh City have been successfully rescued and transferred to Hue as part of a coordinated wildlife conservation effort led by Animals Asia in cooperation with local forest rangers and Bach Ma National Park authorities.
The rescued animals include two Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) and two sun bears (Helarctos malayanus), all estimated to be over 20 years old. They were voluntarily handed over by a local business and have been microchipped for management purposes since 2005.
Following their transfer, the bears will be taken to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Bach Ma National Park for long-term care and rehabilitation. Upon arrival slated for April 14, they will undergo a mandatory quarantine period of at least 30 days for health monitoring and to ensure they are fit for gradual reintroduction into semi-natural conditions.
Authorities described the voluntary handover as a positive signal, reflecting growing awareness and improving effectiveness in wildlife protection and conservation efforts in Vietnam.
According to Nguyen Vu Linh, director of the Bach Ma National Park, the park has prepared adequate facilities and personnel to receive and care for the rescued bears. He noted that all procedures, including quarantine and rehabilitation, would be closely coordinated among relevant agencies to ensure safety and compliance with conservation protocols.
This is the first time the Bach Ma Bear Rescue Centre has received two sun bears, bringing the total number of rescued bears at the facility to 17, including 13 Asiatic black bears previously rehabilitated, he said.
