Dozens hospitalised with suspected food poisoning after eating banh mi in HCM City
VOV.VN - Dozens of people were taken to hospital with suspected food poisoning after eating banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) from a shop in Phu My Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, with relevant agencies investigating the cause.
On December 22, Ba Ria General Hospital said it was treating about 42 patients who developed symptoms after consuming the popular Vietnamese sandwich.
Around 15 patients are being treated in the hospital’s infectious diseases department, while the remainder are receiving care in internal medicine and paediatrics wards. All patients reported similar symptoms, including severe abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhoea.
Hospital admissions began on December 19 and have continued in the days since. Patients said they had eaten banh mi from the N.H. sandwich shop in Phu My ward before symptoms appeared.
One patient, a 57-year-old man identified as N.V.B. and currently being treated in the infectious diseases department, said he bought two assorted banh mi from the shop on the morning of December 19 and shared them with his wife at home. Both later developed severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea and were taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
A representative of Ba Ria General Hospital said some patients with mild symptoms have recovered and been discharged, while those with more serious conditions remain under close monitoring and treatment. The hospital has collected clinical samples for testing and reported the cases to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health.
Local agencies in Phu My Ward have worked with the sandwich shop involved and collected food samples for laboratory testing to identify the cause of the suspected poisoning.
