VOV.VN - Health authorities confirmed on November 8 that samples collected from 83 individuals affected by a food poisoning incident at a Bánh mì (baguette) stall in Hanh Thong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, tested positive for Salmonella, a dangerous bacterium that can be fatal in severe cases.
As of the morning of November 8, four local hospitals in the city reported a total of 83 suspected cases, with Military Hospital 175 treating 47 patients, Tam Anh General Hospital 16, Gia Dinh People’s Hospital 19, and Binh Dan Hospital 1. Among them, 47 patients have already been discharged following appropriate medical care.
In response, the HCM City Department of Food Safety has temporarily suspended operations at the establishment to allow for a thorough investigation, including the collection of food and environmental samples. Authorities are continuing professional procedures to identify the exact cause of the incident.
Salmonella is a toxin commonly found in meat, poultry, milk, raw, or contaminated egg yolks which can be spread through knives, cutting surfaces, or contaminated food processing tools. The bacterium typically enters the body through food, spreading from the intestines into the blood and other organs, causing infections and poisoning.
Symptoms typically include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and watery diarrhea, and may also involve headaches, insomnia, or rashes. Without prompt rehydration and medical care, severe cases can lead to dehydration, low blood pressure, multi-organ failure, and even death.
