Crew of capsized fishing boat rescued at sea

The Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Search and Rescue of the south-central province of Binh Dinh said that a fishing vessel drowned by high waves at sea has been rescued.

The 823CV boat, coded BD 99047 TS with 10 crew members onboard and owned by a resident of Hoai Thanh commune, Hoai Nhon district of Binh Dinh, met the accident at the waters about 50 nautical miles from the Vietnam-Indonesia marine border on January 3.

Immediately after receiving a SOS from the boat, the committee asked for coordination from the National Committee for Natural Disaster Response, Search, and Rescue; the provincial border guard forces, local fishing boats, and relevant agencies to rescue the sailors.

As of 12:30 the same day, a fishing vessel owned by Nguyen Van Vang, also from Hoai Thanh commune, successfully rescued all 10 sailors from the capsized boat before reaching the coast of Malaysia to avoid a tropical typhoon arising at sea.

On January 2, southern provinces urged fishing boats to land or seek shelter as storm Pabuk, the first storm to enter the East Sea in 2019, approaches.

As of 7am on January 2, storm Pabuk was about 460km southeast of the southern region and 360km southeast of Con Dao island, with wind speed reaching 75km per hour. It is currently moving west-southwest.

With the effects of the storm and extreme cold spells, strong winds are forecast to hit the western area of the East Sea, as well as seas of provinces from Quang Ngai to Binh Thuan and from Ba Ria-Vung Tau to Ca Mau.
