VOV.VN - Vietnam has recorded 16,278 new coronavirus infections in 59 cities and provinces across the country during the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said in its coronavirus update on January 7.

Official data from the MoH also show that 11,423 cases were detected in the community, and 24 cases tested positive upon returning to Vietnam from overseas. The remaining patients were diagnosed in lockdown and quarantine areas.

As many as 14,633 patients were discharged from hospital, and 233 patients died of COVID-19 and underlying illnesses.

Of the new infections, Hanoi capital in the north continued to top localities, registering 2,723 cases. As the daily number of new infections keeps rising, experts recommended that Hanoi restrict public events of large gatherings, especially during the coming Lunar New Year holiday, to halt the spread of the virus.

The outbreak is showing signs of abating in the south, though most of the daily infections were detected there. Binh Phuoc took the lead with 716 new cases testing positive during the past 254 hours, followed by Vinh Long, Ca Mau, Tay Ninh, Tra Vinh, ho Chi Minh City and Ben Tre.

As of 06pm on January 7 Vietnam has detected 1,859,841 COVID-19 cases since the start of the first outbreak in January 2020, ranking 28th out of 223 countries and territories worldwide.

Of the infected patients, 1,479,048 have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease.

As many as 33,877 patients have died of the virus, making up 1.8% of the total number of infections.

Nearly 158 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide, with 70 million people getting their second shot and 9 million people receiving their booster jab.
