COVID-19: 57 fresh community cases, 41th fatality confirmed

VOV.VN - Vietnam recorded 57 new local COVID-19 cases over the past six hours to 6 p.m. on May 21, raising the daily count to 131, according to the Health Ministry.

Among the fresh locally-transmitted cases, 39 were found in Bac Giang , Bac Ninh (13), Da Nang (2), Lang Son (1), K Hospital’s Tan Trieu facility (2).

Furthermore, one imported case was also confirmed the same day, bringing the overall number of imported infections to 1,479.

The detection of the latest cases therefore elevates the national count of domestic infections to 3,462, including 1,892 detected since the latest wave of the pandemic hit the country on April 27.

Meanwhile, another COVID-19 patient died on May 21, raising the number of fatalities to 41, all suffering from underlying health conditions.

The latest death was a 89-year-old lady who had suffered heart failure, hypertension, and chronic gastritis.

Among the patients currently receiving treatment, 120 have since tested negative for COVID-19 several times. 

In the wake of fresh community cases, Ho Chi Minh City has ordered street food outlets to avoid serving customers on the spot.

This decision was made by chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong during a meeting held on May 21 after the southern city documented five local COVID-19 cases over the past three days.

As of May 21, Bac Giang province has halted receiving all passengers being transported by car to limit the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a the meeting of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control on May 21, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, head of the Steering Committee, requested that members closely monitor the ongoing pandemic situation in order to forecast developments and initiate countermeasures.

The Deputy Prime Minister therefore emphasized that the Ministry of Health has directed both Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces to find ways to put major factories back in operation as soon as possible.

Deputy PM Dam also noted that the current pandemic situation remains unpredictable, although it has been brought under control. Despite this, the country must not be negligent, even for a moment.

More than three weeks since the start of the latest wave has seen the country record 1,892 cases across 30 cities and provinces, with Bac Giang and Bac Ninh remaining the biggest epicenters with 767 and 391 cases reported so far.
